Ted Hammerman

Edward S. (Ted) Hammerman founded Intermediary Copyright Royalty Services on June 1, 2002. Mr. Hammerman practices communications, entertainment and copyright law primarily in the regulatory and transactional fields. He represents more than two hundred television program suppliers before the U.S. Copyright Office, copyright collectives in Canada, Australia and across Europe. He also represents artists, graphic designers, multimedia companies, entertainers, and software designers in general copyright, corporate and employment matters. Mr. Hammerman negotiates on behalf of clients in transactions and in litigation. He has experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts and settlement agreements, and served as an advisor to one of Washington, D.C.’s premier law firms on copyright royalty issues. Mr. Hammerman has been recognized as Who’s Who in American Law (1999-2021), Who’s Who in America (2000; 2003; 2004; 2006; 2007; 2008), Who’s Who in Finance & Business (2006-2007; 2008-2009), and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders (1st Edition, 2007).

In 1994, Ted Hammerman began his legal career as a law clerk for the Honorable James H. Quello, former Chairman and Commissioner of the FCC. From 1994 to 1996, he was employed at Venable Baetjer Howard & Civiletti, LLP, in Washington, DC. From 1996 to 1998, Mr. Hammerman worked in Miami, Florida, where he helped the nation’s largest broadcasting company grow from 12 to more than 120 radio stations. In 1998, Mr. Hammerman returned to Washington, DC, and worked at Collier Shannon Rill & Scott, PLLC, where he represented broadcasters, tower companies, and telecommunications clients before the FCC and the Department of Justice, and video program suppliers, producers, and copyright holders before the Copyright Office. From 1999-2002, Mr. Hammerman worked at Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky LLP continuing to grow his communications and copyright practice.

Community Activities

Ted Hammerman has volunteered as counsel to the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, and has been a member of NATPE, the National Association of Television Programming Executives, and the Sports Lawyers Association. He participates actively in the Association of Emory University Alumni’s Washington, DC Chapter, and recently served a three-year term on the Emory College Alumni Board and currently serves as an Emory Alumni Ambassador.

Mr. Hammerman served as a Chief Assistant Judge for the Democratic Party during the 2002 primary and general elections in Montgomery County, Maryland, and has served as a Spanish-speaking Chief Judge in Montgomery County in the 2004 elections.

Ted Hammerman served as Assistant General Counsel and Ethics Officer for The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from 2003 through 2007, where he counseled the United States’ national cultural center and the National Symphony Orchestra on copyright, licensing, risk management, tort claims, and transactional matters.

In 2009, the Board of Directors of Canada’s Société de Gestion Collective de Publicité Directe Télévisuelle Inc. (Direct Response Television Collective Inc. or “DRTVC”) invited Mr. Hammerman to serve as a Member of DRTVC’s Advisory Board in recognition of his experience and expertise in retransmission royalties. He continues to serve there today.
